Basic Exploration
The basic exploration of the form of a light bulb began with quick perspective sketches of it from different angles.
Geometric Form Exploration
First step along the path to the reconstruction of my chosen object, the light bulb was to understand it's geometric form and shape. This was achieved by deconstructing the bulb part by part on multiple isometric sheets. This was a complicated and challenging task, which required a lot of patience and attention to detail. It was complicated primarily because I had to focus on all the nooks and intricacies of a light bulb, using not only the perspective of one who is knowledgeable about the subject, but also that of someone less inclined. This tedious job was one of the most difficult, yet interesting things I have ever taken up. It gave me a lot of insight about the working of a light bulb, something that we use so commonly in our day to day life yet know so little about other than the fact it gives us light.
After a thorough identification process in which I found out the various uses and the importance of all the multiple components of a light bulb, I decided to pick the glass stem of the bulb as the part I wanted to explore in detail. This was an easy decision to make because in my opinion, the glass stem is the most intriguing and integral element of a light bulb. It is the constituent that holds everything together, and makes it work as a device. The entire glass light bulb is built around the glass stem, making it an indispensable part of the bulb.
Once I had picked the glass stem as the component I was going to look into, I started the process of modelling it into forms influenced by the key words derived by me, including but not limited to, basic, rustic and warmth. Through mind mapping, words like nature, wood, tree, black etc. came up, which to me deconstructing the glass stem in an effort to make it look like them. My deconstructed glass stem's final form can be seen in the image uploaded above.
